About Värtan Energi...

Värtan Energi is an ambitious, creative and goal-oriented energy community with the northeastern part of Stockholm’s inner city as its work area. An energy community is owned and operated by the citizens who live and work in the area. Through their energy community, citizens can take control of their energy use, lower the operating costs of buildings and reduce their buildings’ climate impact.

The purpose of Värtan Energi is to provide energy efficiency, sharing and storing energy and to arrange own energy production. Furthermore, Värtan Energi will work to ensure that the work area has a low climate and environmental impact according to the UN’s definition of sustainability. In practice, the condition means that the building’s energy use shall be emission-free.

Complementary activities of Värtan Energi’s purpose are to provide sharing of utilities that citizens need, such as vehicles and equipment for building maintenance. More specifically, it can be electric cars and tools for building inspection and repair works. Finally, Värtan Energi can work for a high standard of buildings in the area and increased togetherness among people active in the community area.

The conditions for emission-free energy use in the Värtan Energy built-up area are exceptionally good. Värtan Energi’s area of operations covers 1,700 hectares with an incoming solar radiation of 18,000 GWh per year, which is many times more than the current energy use in the area’s buildings, approximately 558 GWh. In addition to solar radiation, there are good opportunities for wind power, for example silent vertical wind turbines on open water surfaces and on tall buildings.

Technically and economically, there are no difficulties in fulfilling the objective. Modern energy technology provides the technical possibilities for energy-autonomous buildings. Economically, operating costs will be considerably lower with own energy than with energy purchased from external energy suppliers. The challenges are organizational and to some extent legal.

The area has approximately 43,000 inhabitants (equivalent to a medium-sized Swedish municipality). The built-up area consists mainly of residential buildings and four large universities. There are some business activities in the form of offices and shops.

By corresponding to a medium-sized Swedish municipality, Värtan Energi can demonstrate the importance that the energy community concept can have in eliminating the climate impact of buildings and at the same time in reducing tenants’ costs for rental apartments/premises and annual fees in tenant-owned housing associations. Citizens receive, by definition, higher welfare when the cost of housing and premises decreases.

Värtan Energi is according to Swedish law a member-owned economic association (ekonomisk förening). All real estate owners and residents in the area have the right to become  member. The concept of energy community is codified by the EU and described as a way to reduce the climate and environmental impact of buildings.
